In a live conversation at WHOOP headquarters in Boston moderated by Rags Gupta, I joined Joe Liemandt, the principal of the much-discussed and debated Alpha School, to talk about the hype and hope behind AI in K-12 education.
I think a better effort would be if EVERY school that either receives federal tax breaks or any federal funds be required to: accept all students based on a lottery (well publicized in several languages and venues) of all students who apply in a 50 mile radius and then fund those students regardless of needs. Further, schools with a less than 10% acceptance of application rates over three years can create more such schools and those with a less than 100% of seats application rate need to show, within 5 years, improvement or be closed. Public education should be both a right and a responsibility for all (no home-school and no private education that does not accept on lottery of all). There is no way an AI school can address the multiple special needs of public schools, they just want the 'easy' students. They want to funds. What a tragedy to monetize children, but that is big data all over is it not?
